Intelligent Search Engine Marketing

Hello
I recently came across a text link plan to boost link popularity & page rank as well as an article by a search engine marketing company. That set my mind thinking. Does the text link plan work? And in what scenario? And what is the real price of using such a service?
Here's my understanding. Yes, it can work well if your site is already up & running properly and... Contains the right keywords & meta tags. Has keyword density. And complemented by intelligent search engine submissions ie. not done by bots/auto-submits (from our own experience, auto-submissions are not targeted enough -- more on this later). Otherwise won't it be expensive to keep your link/website prominent?
And the REAL price of that service? It's going to make nonsense of any statistics you may have to track the performance of your product -- The way I think, I want to know if my product deserves to be where it is. And if not, I want to know why. And I'll also learn in the process of getting it right. Besides, what's the point if people do come and I haven't yet perfected the product through the process? This continuous feedback, analysis and fine-tuning to get your product into the top ranking is, in my opinion, the best way to get there because then it deserves to be there.
So at eMasters, here's how we have decided will be our process for all new products: We will track the product first on a standalone salespage, launching the product as an "introductory price" item. During this phase we can work on our adcopies, etc. and track the conversion ability of the product -- Whether the price is right, the pitch is right, the navigational process is right and also whether we need to tighten up or improve our terms of service.
When all is to our satisfaction, we will then insert the new product into our website. This is of course the ideal. So what about existing products we already have on our site? We'll see if there are any items that are not doing well, and put them through the same mill.
You may well want to do it the way I suggested above. This is because if you are like us, we already have visitors coming in from other promotions and via search engines. This will cause a distortion in your figures and so your ability to isolate and analyse. With the items that are doing well, just continue improving on them from feedbacks, etc.
Here I would like to thank our old friend Alan Reese for the installation of our Ad Tracker. We now have the capability to track our ads and we're making full use of it! You can visit Alan at AX Gold Software.
Next, we're on the lookout for a sales tracker that can track originating links. Should complete the process by then, I think. Any ideas out there?
Now back to my original question. Yes, there may come a time when I may want to use a text link promotion service -- When I am confident of my product, done all the right things... and someone is still on top of me because they are using this service. But I don't have that problem yet.

Here are the steps we took to achieve the front page & top results you see above:
Besides giants like Google & Yahoo! as well as other major search engines, we also submitted to a large number of indexes. This was about 2+ years ago----(as you may be aware, we'd reduced our promotions for quite sometime already to focus on other things and we have only, in the last one month plus, re-started our promotional engine)----and our search engine placements are still good.
My conclusion is we've done the keywords & meta tagging well. And the hand-tailored intelligent search engine submissions we did all those years ago must still be paying in spades.
Lastly, we have also never used pay-per-clicks nor purchased hits, traffic, etc. But I'm happy with the results.
